‘It’s opened a can of worms’

The post-McCrone agreement could swiftly end out-of-school activities at the beginning of next session, the Sportscotland seminar was warned by west of Scotland teachers.

“It has opened a can of worms,” one Glasgow head said. An East Renfrewshire teacher feared that staff involved in development work until 5pm every day wouldretaliate by refusing to take lunchtime clubs.

Staff should be given time for sport within the contractural 35-hour week, Charlie Raeburn, chairman of the Scottish Schoolsport Federation, said.

“All teaching staff should be asked to contribute a small amount of time to additional activities,” Mr Raeburn added.
