The NGfL in Action stand will have lots to see. Karen Shead gives a preview

The National Grid for Learning stand is the place to see the widest variety of teaching resources from early years to college level. And visitors to the NGFL in Action stand will be able to talk to children and teachers, and hear what they think of what’s on offer.

Following last year’s success of Ticket to Space, Learning and Teaching Scotland is running the initiative again, from October 27 to December 5, and has invited all primary schools to take part.

Ticket to Space is a six-week classroom project in which children can enrol in space school, take a virtual tour of the solar system, discover space travel, and “ask the expert” online and via video-conferencing.

There will be presentations from Strathyre and Kilbowie primaries, which participated last year, and pupils from these and other schools will be speaking to the European Space Agency live via video-conferencing.

Meanwhile, a virtual editorial work experience CD-Rom called Assess The Herald will be launched at 10.45am on Wednesday. It encourages students to analyse newspaper production decisions and outcomes; key personnel explain their jobs, and it even allows a virtual visit to the print works.

Developed by The Herald newspaper in partnership with the Higher Results Consultancy, it has been designed for media studies andor English pupils at Intermediate 2 or Higher.

Learning and Teaching Scotland has created a website to complement its Creativity in Education publication. Its official launch is at 11.30am on Wednesday and 12.15pm on Thursday.

5-14 Online is to be relaunched by development officer Malcolm MacDonald, who will demonstrate its new features and resources, and talk about future plans for the site. You can catch him on either day between 2.30pm and 3.15pm.

Anyone interested in the new Parentzone website, which provides information for parents, guardians and carers of school-age children, will be able to see its new look and what it can do on the NGfL stand.

Visit on Wednesday between 4 and 4.45pm, or Thursday from 10.45 to 11.30am.

A Gaelic-language version of the popular classroom CD-Rom Healthy Kids - Inside Outside will be launched. Children from Condorrat Primary will be on the stand to demonstrate Healthy Kids. Please check demonstration times on arrival.

And to show how interactive ICT can be, pupils from Tobermory High on the Isle of Mull will be competing in an inter-school quiz via Learning and Teaching Scotland’s video-conferencing bridge at 12.30pm on Wednesday. They won a similar quiz against other Argyll and Bute schools in the summer and are due to take on the winners from another education authority.

School pupils will also be using video-conferencing in a bid to persuade visitors of their towns’ tourist attractions. Children from several schools will give a brief guide in a virtual forum from 10.30am on Thursday.
