English local authorities have received a document a day from central government since Labour took office.
The number of parcels sent to each LEA peaked in 1999 at more than 11 a week. So far this year ministers have sent out a total of 60 consultation documents, letters, guidance, egulations and requests for data. This works out at around four a week.
However, Jacqui Smith, education junior minister, said that “very few” of these items were sent to schools. She was responding to a question from Phil Willis, Liberal Democrat education spokesperson.
