We are delighted to be able to announce, just after the white smoke which billowed above the Vatican, that we have a result in that other competition of note - not so much to find a pope, but the top lollipop.

So Scotland’s number one is Myra Pugh, who has been on patrol for the past 29 years outside Edinburgh Academy’s junior school. Beating 3,000 other entries, which came from primary pupils, parents and the community, Mrs Pugh was the clear winner with nearly 200 nominations.

It wasn’t just a matter of looking after the weans: the competitors were graded on their local knowledge, sensitivity to drivers and on what they did over and above the call of duty. Alistair Darling, the Scottish Secretary and local MP, was on hand to present Mrs Pugh with her engraved trophy and pound;500 prize -presumably in a non-electioneering sort of way.
