I’ve waited over 40 years for this

On February 24, 1961, the TES published an article by me outlining a largely phonetic scheme which dramatically raised literacy in Birmingham secondary schools. A similar scheme in inner-city primaries achieved similar results.

A small group of heads have lobbied the Government since the the 1980s about the damage the prescribed approach to teaching reading was inflicting on children - but to no avail!

Are we too old in our 70s to advise on tried and tested methods? We would be much cheaper than the current so-called experts!
