MORE THAN 1,200 “jaded” heads are known to have applied to receive pay-outs of up to pound;50,000 to leave the profession.

But only 300 have been accepted for consideration by their local authorities, which have to contribute to the scheme. The heads, in their late 50s, have all responded to a Government bid to pension-off those unwilling to push through its reforms. The applications are now under consideration at the Department for Education and Employment.
