MORE mothers may keep their children with them in prison under proposals being examined by the prison service.
The plans suggest more special units to accommodate children up to the age of four, allowing them to stay with their mothers, rather than being forced tostay with relatives or go into care.Women in open prisons in England and Wales are allowed to keep their babies until they are 18 months old.
But prison campaigners attacked the idea, saying more mothers should be given community sentences, not jailed.
