Jamie’s ‘teacher’ ambitions have been rumbled

I hope very much that the item “Retraining as a teacher? They’ll eat you alive, Jamie!” (1 April) was an April Fool hoax.

It is tragic precisely because on first reading it is entirely believable. It satirises several assumptions embedded both in Jamie’s Dream School and in general media reporting of education: the fact that high-level qualifications and training for school teaching can be usurped by a “common sense” approach; the tacit acceptance that fame, wealth and celebrity can naturally be equated with expertise; and a general idea that the teaching profession is fair game for disrespectful misrepresentation and constant government tinkering with a system that is never allowed to settle before it is changed.
