Gordon Kirk, education supremo at Edinburgh University, was his usual pugnacious self at a citizenship conference held under his Moray House roof. "We are here to engage in debate - and that means the normal rules of academic discourse will apply," Kirk said. "In other words, we'll slag each other off in a vigorous manner. I jest, of course - well, maybe not."
