One of Helen Liddell’s last acts as Labour’s education spokeswoman before moving to the Treasury was to appoint Brian Boyd of the Quality in Education Centre at Strathclyde University to head a commission into teacher training.

You might think Boyd, a Labour adviser, will be well placed to influence the new administration. His role will certainly make for interesting times at Victoria Quay in Leith where Douglas Osler, the Government’s chief adviser and head of the Inspectorate, will be briefing the new Education Minister.

In The TES Scotland last October, the HMI report on setting in S1 and S2 was described as a “simplistic and dogmatic solution”. Want to guess by whom?
