More than 2,500 extra education staff were employed by councils between March 1999 and March last year, a joint local authority and Scottish Executive survey reveals. An extra 644teachers were recruited, a 1.2 per cent increase, taking the total to 54,655. A further 1,902 support staff were added, mostly classroom assistants and nursery workers.
