* John Bangs, the NUT's head of education, has emerged as a surprise contender for the union's deputy general secretary post. He decided to stand for election after representations from his supporters and more significantly those of Mr Sinnott. Mr Bangs was a well-beaten third in the summer's leadership contest.

Left-wing factions are backing Christine Blower, the union's former president.
