A Pacific islands newspaper printed on beaten bark, rubber dentures and a shirt made from pineapple fibre are among hundreds of unusual artefacts made from plants which will soon be on show again when Kew Gardens’ museum re-opens at the end of May.

The grade II listed building, designed by Decimus Burton and opened in 1857, closed in 1987 because it needed repair.

But with the help of Pounds 1,400,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, restoration work is nearing completion, and when it re-opens it will also contain classrooms and lecture and demonstration areas. For details tel: 0181 332 5622.
