JORDAN: A plan to introduce peace studies into the curriculum for fourth-formers was announced during a two-day workshop in Amman on the “Fear of Peace”, by an east Jerusalem-based organisation, the Israel-Palestine Centre for Research and Information (IPCRI).

Dr Marwan Darwish, director of the centre’s peace education project, said the idea is to “take existing subjects (history, literature, sociology) and enrich them with the idea of democracyI We want to move from dehumanisation to seeing the humanity of the other, from the perspective of peace, not war”.

The programme will be tested and introduced in four pilot schools: one each in the Israeli, Palestinian, Israeli-Arab and Jordanian sectors. The scheme will be extended by September to eight schools in each sector.
