WOODHEADISM lives on. Rumours about the imminient departure of the chief inspector have always proved premature and more of the kind are likely as the general election approaches.

The current theory is he will depart in time to damage New Labour with details of how Tny Blair asked for a loan of a couple of good ideas on education. However he appears to have taken a vow of silence. At the last meeting of the Standards Task Force he sat through a few hours on the first day without saying a word and disappeared before dinner.
