Just tell your staff to get a grip

Being in charge of an organisation can bring the intolerable burden of other people over-estimating your ability to solve problems. A recent seminar by the Warwick Institute of Governance and Public Management addresses these frustrations.

The publicity blurb said it would “raise awareness of the need for effective leaders to recognise and harness emotions and feelings in leading individual groups and to challenge ‘followers’ to take ownership of their professional responsibility for the adaptive work needed to grapple with their situation rather than to foster infantile fantasies about the leader’s god-like capacity to solve all problems”.

If this sounds like a rant, spare a thought for the institute’s supporters, who include “senior associate fellow” John Harwood - former LSC chief executive.
