Tougher health specifications for school food are to be introduced as part of a drive to give parents a greater say in their children’s lunches.
Ruth Kelly, the Education Secretary, was expected to announce yesterday that she would be bringing in new rules for processed foods such as beefburgers and cakes in September, ahead of new minimum standards planned for 2006.
She was also due to reveal plans for an independent “school food trust” which will give schools help with their menus.
