In a world where niceness is underrated and selfishness elevated to an art form, it is good to learn of schools where teachers make a special effort to look after each other. Like Jimmy Stewart in It’s a Wonderful Life, who requires a guardian angel to show him how much good he has done for others, people’s self-esteem soars heavenward when they know they have made a difference. Of course, it would be easy to make fun of London’s “guardian angel” scheme (page 9), which has staff secretly making each other cups of tea or sneaking bouquets of flowers into each others’ classrooms - but let’s not. As summer approaches, it’s time to let the sun shine in.
