There was a marvellous moment in this week’s episode of The Amazing Mrs Pritchard on BBC1 when, newly installed in Downing Street, the new PM is told by her daughter that she wants to go to the local comprehensive school. Initially horrified, the fictional Mrs Pritchard finally agrees to her daughter’s request, hoping her lead will turn the school’s fortunes around.

New research suggests that her idealism is shared by teachers. Most, it seems, prefer the diversity and community values of the local state school to sending their children to a private one.

In truth, only the bravest teachers would choose a failing school for their children. But where teachers have the advantage over other parents is that they do know what to look for in a really good school. That is something no amount of money can buy.
