One of America’s biggest school districts has opened a ‘hotline’ for anxious students who are worried about the election of Donald Trump as president.

The Los Angeles Unified School District has also opened six ‘extended support sites’ - centers that will offer “emotional support, enrolment and attendance information” in response to Mr Trump’s victory.

School Board President Steve Zimmer said he had spoken with numerous students and parents, who were feeling anxious about their future, according to a statement released by the district.  He reiterated its commitment to helping and providing them with a quality education.

“We value every student, every family, no matter which part of the world you come from, what language you speak or what religion you practice,” Mr Zimmer said. “You are all part of the L.A. Unified family.”

The school district is 74 per cent Latino. Mr Trump made a series of inflammatory comments about immigrants during the election campaign, including pledges to build a wall to keep Mexicans out of the US and to deport immigrants who are in the country illegally. He also described Mexican immigrants as “rapists”.

Parents and teachers were told about the additional support in a recorded call from Michelle Young, the district’s superintendent. She said she wanted to answer students’ questions “about the potential impact on them and their families”, the LA Times reported.

Following Mr Trump’s election win, the LA school board passed a vote stating that its schools are “safe zones” for young people in the country illegally.
