Labour takes leap of faith

Labour has pledged an unprecedented pound;550 million to rebuild every faith secondary school in England, reversing a 60-year rule which requires churches to contribute to building costs. Contribution rates are currently 15 per cent in Wales but only 10 per cent in England. An Assembly spokesperson said there was no pressure for change in Wales. But the English decision has outraged secular groups, who have accused Education Secretary Ruth Kelly, a Roman Catholic, of using taxpayers’ money to push church-based education.
