The workload fuss has, of course, stemmed from blurring the line between teachers and support staff. People are bamboozled by having someone in charge of a class who is not a teacher.
Children seem to be having little difficulty though, as Gerald Haigh, chairman of governors at St Giles junior in Warwickshire (guest editor of this week’s Primary forum, 18), discovered when he assumed that his granddaughter’s teaching assistant was her teacher.
“She’s not a teacher!” quipped the five-year-old. “She’s a lady.”
