THE observations in your editorial (TES, January 5) strike me as sadly rather typical of the isolationist British belief that the whole world speaks English.

Recently, I spoke to a senior executive of Deutsche Telekom. Many candidates are not interviewed unless they have at least three languages. Surely British firms must follow suit?

The real-world job market is demanding additional language skills so if you want job choice at all, acquire the skills now. Do not complain about the salaries; in a shrinking job market it may be the only salary you can have!
