(Photograph) - Ooh la la. L’ amour was in the air - maybe - as Cupid’s arrow hit young lovers from Coed Eva junior school, in Torfaen.

But the tale of how a young Welshman fell for a French girl, upsetting her love rival, was only a brief affair, writes Aled Blake. It was soon dropped for football, a subject closer to many of the young pupils’ hearts.

Children from four of Cwmbran’s primary schools, all piloting the key stage 2 modern foreign languages programme, ably demonstrated their French-speaking abilities in a range of romantic and comedic sketches for an audience that included Jane Davidson, the minister for education, lifelong learning and skills.

Teachers and parents were in the audience to watch the children demonstrate their abilities.

“Aujourd’hui. Je suis Steven Gerrard,” said one boy, as he modelled his full Liverpool FC strip. “J’adore rouge.”

The event was staged to show off the children’s new-found language skills as a result of the KS2 MFL programme.
