People’s lives are shaped by their natural environment and this is reflected in language, for example there is no English equivalent of the Spanish word “siesta”. It’s a point worth reinforcing at KS3 to raise pupils’ awareness of how language evolves.
Bioindicators are highly relevant to the study of environmental issues at KS5. To obtain a variety of salient examples, students could enter “bioindicator” and an appropriate country into a search engine and pool their findings. The addition of key words such as “ecosystem”, “unique” and “endangered species” also produces interesting results.
