Michael Rosen urged teachers to ensure that pupils do not see poetry as an “assault course” in his first official talk as children’s laureate this week. Speaking at London University’s Institute of Education, he said dull, closed questions on subjects such as alliteration could stop children’s interest. He said that teachers should ask children whether poems remind them of anything they have read, or that had happened to them.
