The Govan school is once again facing the axe and a further round of opt-out ballots.
St Gerard’s, alma mater to Billy Connolly and Jimmy Reid, is due to celebrate its diamond jubilee next year. A wake may be a more likely prospect.
One councillor keeping her own counsel is Deirdre Gaughan, who masterminded the previous opt-out campaign and lengthened the school’s stay of execution by a couple of years. On the back of her prominence, she was elected to the council on a Labour ticket and joined the education committee.
Since then, she has been thrown out of the Labour group for alleged misdemeanours, currently the subject of party inquiries.
Gaughan continues to hold her surgery within St Gerard’s half-empty halls. But will she do her utmost to ensure the school is not going, going, Gaughan?
