A QUEST for knowledge has overtaken losing weight and giving up smoking as the top New Year resolution for 2003.

Forty four per cent of people questioned are pledging to learn something new this year, according to a survey by ICM Research. Losing weight came second (36 per cent). At the bottom of the list, with just 4 per cent, was giving up alcohol.

The most popular course choice in the survey was computing, chosen by 30 per cent of respondents.

The survey was commissioned by the Learning and Skills Council. LSC chair Bryan Sanderson said: “People are realising that learning enhances and enriches the quality of our lives. Learning is good for the economy and the nation overall.”
