The course is certainly flexible. Each of its 18 chapters begins with a series of pictures or cartoons to introduce the topic and get students thinking about their own responses to it. More detailed reading texts then develop themes in greater depth. Text attack exercises are provided as well as vocabulary and grammar work.
Everything is in German, including a graded explanation and revision of grammar. End-of-chapter tests also provide opportunities for assessment and evaluation. Each of these sections is carefully colour-coded. “So Wird’s Gesagt” focuses on stock-phrases - those popular “chunks” or “pre-fabricated forms” - that learners use in constructing their language. Here they are specifically applied to a series of simulations featured throughout the book - personal response is the guiding principle.
The new edition of Einsicht has been thoroughly overhauled in terms of style and content - the mixture of authentic and manufactured texts is welcome. Colour and graphic design, and the reproduction of historic documents, photos and newspaper articles make it an appealing book and bring the real world into this advanced level. Accompanying cassettes provide supporting materials from a wide range of sources: radio, television, discussions and conversations.
Inevitably, perhaps, the history of contemporary Germany - from National Socialism to Reunification - features strongly, but these are mixed in with more personal, vocational and cultural topics which provide a sensible balance between individual and worldwide concerns. Einsicht is an ambitious course which sets high standards. The updated version must make it a first choice for teachers of students at this level.
