NEW ZEALAND: The school leaving age is to be raised to 17 on January 1 1998. About Pounds 4.3 million will be spent on buildings and equipment to cope with the extra pupils. The change will coincide with the full implementation of the national qualifications framework.

* There has been a 30 per cent increase in the numbers receiving home teaching. In July 1994, there were 4,074, compared with 3,141 in 1993 and 1,471 in 1989, when figures were first collected.
