The results show that more than three-quarters of the 1,200 respondents disagree or strongly disagree with the government’s move to scrap the requirement for FE teachers and trainers to be qualified.Ministers have said it is up to individual institutions to decide what qualifications its teachers need. There was strong support among respondents for the expansion of apprenticeships and traineeships, but little support for changes to GCSEs.When asked what they would do if they were minister for FE and skills, respondents said they would reinstate the training requirement as well as increase FE funding, scrap all tuition fees and make sure school-leavers had the right skills to progress to further education, particularly in English and maths. The work of the IfL is to be taken over by the Education and Training Foundation, whose chief executive David Russell last week revealed that it would soon start a large-scale consultation on plans for an individual membership service that he said would work for everyone in the sector.
