* KS3GCSE. The importance of communication during wartime is a strong theme in the article. Students could do a comparative study of changes in communication and other aspects of warfare over numerous timescales. The Boer War (1899 to 1902), the Great War of (1914 to 1918) and the Second World War (1939 to 1945) make a particularly enlightening study.

lJKS23. A second key theme is navigation. Pupils could study the methods of navigation used by early travellers and explorers and examine how these developed from the time of the Egyptians to the present. A good way to chart improving human understanding of navigation is to look at changing maps. The British Library’s website (www.bl.uk) has an interesting collection of old and new maps.
