Key stage 1: Talk about what it would feel like to be inside this picture. What would you do?

KS2: The painting “Artist’s Studio No. 1 (Look Mickey)” is like a stage-set. Write a short play about two people you can’t see - the artist and Mickey Mouse, or the artist and “Curly” Grogan. Use sound effects and make use of all the props.

Paint a scene from your play, using speech bubbles, and copying the colours, lines and dots from the painting.

KS3: Choose the landscape, or the picture of the speech bubble in the painting. Make a version of the landscape using lines and Benday dots, but not solid colour. Make a picture to illustrate the words in the speech bubble, using a frame from a comic book as your source.

KS4: Lichtenstein used comic books and advertising as the main sources for much of his work. Have comics changed much since he first used them in the 1960s? Can you still find advertising images such as the ones he used for the sofa and the phone?

A-level: Compare Matisse’s “The Red Studio” with Lichtenstein’s painting. What is similar, and what is different? Is Lichtenstein’s painting parody or homage?
