SOUTH AFRICA: A multi-lingual curriculum offering mother-tongue learning in all of South Africa’s 11 official languages has been unveiled. The curriculum, which has been hailed by the unions as teacher-friendly, includes clear statements about what needs to be learned in each grade. The first post-apartheid curriculum switched the focus from rote-learning to critical thinking and problem-solving but the language was too complicated for most teachers to understand.
