Teachers need to know about immigrant children’s previous education if they are to help them progress, according to new guidance from the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority.

Ken Boston, chief executive of the QCA, said the document Pathways to Learning for New Arrivals was intended as a “one-stop-shop” for information on integrating newly arrived pupils.

It includes background on pupils’ countries of origin, legal rights and entitlements and shows ways to adapt the curriculum and gives ideas for activities. It was drawn up following consultation with teachers, pupils, the Refugee Council, the Office for Standards in Education and other bodies.

Case studies of schools where good practice has been identified are included.

Pathways to Learning for New Arrivals can be found at www.qca.org.uknewarrivals.
