‘English children are the most tested in the world’ ( TES , 28 March). This fact might even be acceptable if the tests were diagnostic and the teachers could build upon the results. Only the ‘basic’ test - the very first one - is of any use to a teacher. It informs the teacher of certain strengths and weaknesses of the young pupil and saves time all round.
