The Christians who spoke to Barry Hugill (Analysis July 20) may well be working for the common good with no thought of proselytising. But if the Church Schools Review Group (chaired by Lord Dearing) has its way, this will not continue.
Its report begins by confirming “the crucial importance of Church schools to the whole mission of the Church to children and young people, and indeed to the long-term well-being of the Church of England” and continues in this missionary vein. The schools of other faith groups are even less likely to cater for the whole community, despite the fact that they will be funded largely or completely by the whole community.
