Letters extra: Don’t ditch Bruner

Phil Wisdom, in his article ‘It was all about Ticking Boxes’ ( Friday 9.2.01) describes the disappointments that made him give up his PGCE course.

I sympathise with his stance, but I can’t agree that less Bruner and Vygotsky would make for a better teacher training course.

Bruner’s theories, taught to me over 20 years ago at Goldsmiths’ College, still shape my teaching.

Phil Wisdom might prefer to learn behaviour control techniques, but these are often picked up in the thick of classroom life, with experience. Please don’t criticise the greats of educational theory, they provide us with desperately needed vision.
