Letters extra: Dropping the Holocaust

I am astonished that as part of the revision of the new GCSE courses the Holocaust has been omitted from Edexcel’s specifications from September.

It is the moral duty of us all to teach each generation about the Holocaust. If such subjects slip off the exam syllabus there is a danger that, 60 years on, the memory will fade. The timing of the decision seems remarkable, considering the establishment of Holocaust memorial day and the creation of the brilliant Holocaust exhibition at the Imperial War Museum.

I hope that Edexcel will reconsider its decision and re-establish the Holocaust as the central aspect of any study of Nazi Germany (having it as a coursework option is not satisfactory).
