Letters extra: learning for fun

Rose Heiny’s article (Another Voice, TES June 1) eloquently illustrates that the addition of extra examinations to an already busy schedule is counter-productive. The Department for Education seems to have lost sight of the fact that learning is, among other things, “for fun, Sir,” as anbsp;10-year-old boy once told me. May I recommend that its members read E M Forster’s short story “The Celestial Omnibus” to remind themselves that this essential truth still applies, before devising more inappropriate tasks to obstruct the path to real education.
