Geoff Dean is concerned to defend “literacy” against Philip Pullman and is right. English teachers all want to use different tactics for enabling their pupils to dig deeper into the meanings of texts.

But to say “passing tests or meeting targets, will then naturally follow” is disingenuous when the tests are so strictly defined and influential. Teachers have no choice but to teach to them.
