Letters Extra : Too little too late

At Family Planning Association we often hear from teenagers that their experience of sex and relationships education in school is `too little, too late and too biological’ (Sex: what you will not learn at school 09.07.04).

Whilst many schools strive for excellence in this area there are others who do not meet pupils’ needs. As a nation that finds talking about sex as a natural part of life very difficult, both teachers and parents need support to do it effectively.

We would like to see SRE become a mandatory part of a comprehensive PSHE programme in the National Curriculum from Key Stage 1 to counteract this inequality of provision. All pupils should have access to age-appropriate SRE as part of their lifelong learning in this area.

Many young people turn to alternative sources of advice such as teenage magazines which by and large deliver good information in a responsible way. However, they should not be their sole source of support.
