Claims that candidates have been awarded a GCSE in mathematics by the Southern Examining Group despite scoring only 14 per cent were vigorously denied this week by both the Government and the Associated Examining Board.
“The claims are utterly untrue,” said a spokesman for the Department for Education and Employment.“Someone getting just 14 per cent overall on this syllabus would not have passed and, indeed, would not even have received a grade.”
“Nobody will get a grade in maths with 14 per cent as alleged,” said an SEG spokesman.
