Sixth form colleges would occupy seven of the top 10 places in a league table of A-level performance in state comprehensives, the Association of Colleges said.

The top-performing colleges are: Cardinal Newman, Preston; Winstanley, Wigan; Greenhead, Huddersfield; King Edward VI, Stourbridge; Hills Road, Cambridge; Sixth Form College Farnborough; and Peter Symonds, Winchester. Martin Doel, AoC chief executive, said: “They are outperforming schools in terms of both results and added value.”
