Dennis Hayes is right to urge us to celebrate science (FE Focus, October 6). Science has made life much less “nasty, brutish and short”. But what science cannot do is place intrinsic value on each human life. It is the longing for meaning, beyond evolutionary struggle, that brings out the crystals and the spell books.
There is not so much an anti-science culture abroad as a thirst for meaning in a seemingly indifferent universe. That cannot always be quenched in the lab.
