?ESPANOL NINGUN PROBLEMA! By Sue Brown, Geoff Grigg, Mar!a Elena Tejado Mata and Hampshire County Council John Murray Pounds 39.50

This comprehensive resource book for teachers of Spanish follows the successful French version Le Francais? C’est facile! It is an unpretentious, well-structured and user-friendly set of materials produced by a team of experts. The target pupils are those with special needs, but its clarity of layout and uncomplicated approach make it appropriate for use with primary school pupils and initial learners of Spanish at secondary school.

This book would provide a marvellous chance for a primary school teacher to introduce Spanish, providing a ready-made modular scheme of work. Similarly, the resource offers the Spanish teacher and non-linguist support teacher in secondary school a set of materials designed to enhance the language acquisition and to support pupils. There is a fund of games and activities with instructions, including favourites such as Snap and Beetle.

No cross-curricular opportunity has been missed. All elements of good practice in art, drama, movement, music, numeracy and so forth have found their rightful place and have been exploited here. Opportunities for assessment in attainment targets are mapped. The linguistic objectives are well documented. The photocopiable worksheets and flash cards are time-saving and invaluable. They include templates such as clocks, speech bubbles, identity cards, survey sheets, maps of Spain, blank cafe menus, with examples of how to exploit them.

The scheme of work progresses through nine modules from Module l “Here I am” to Module 9 “Being Me”, including topic plans and teaching notes. Everything in the resource pack is practical and suggestions are carefully explained.

This would be a useful addition to all modern language departments - not only for children with special needs but for all staff as a source of inspiration. ?Espanol? Ningun Problema! could be a precious lifeline for PGCE students and newly qualified teachers as well.

Mary O’Sullivan is a senior lecturer in Spanish at the University of Hertfordshire
