A strike call over plans to raise the pension age for teachers to 65 received the unanimous backing of SSTA delegates.
David Eaglesham, the union’s general secretary, said that the Government had not changed its position, despite calling for talks with public sector workers in the lead-up to the general election.
“All the campaign of smoke and mirrors has proved as vacuous as we all thought it would be,” Mr Eaglesham said.
Ministers were failing to take into account the future needs of the profession and he questioned whether there would be enough teachers in 15 to 20 years’ time.
Delegates backed a call to renew the executive council’s mandate to call a ballot on strike action as and when it felt appropriate.
