We are glad to note that discourse at Glasgow’s new education committee is as intense and spirited as it ever was in the old Strathclyde. Indeed the two sparring partners from those days are still with us - about the only two who are.
Malcolm Green is still on board, although he now masquerades as Labour’s chief whip (oops, business manager), not the committee’s chairman. And sitting there menacingly is the administration’s gadfly-in-chief, Chris Mason.
Mason, however, was at his most courteous at last week’s meeting. He told the classicist Green: “I am always prepared to be guided by Councillor Green on the matter of languages - even if they’re not deid ones.”
