IF ONLY the Prime Minister had a full, rather than a selective memory, he would have remembered that the vast majority of teachers were not against the national curriculum, just the way it was introduced and its impossible size. Millions of pounds was spent pursuing policies without listening to ordinary teachers.

The literacy hour is another example. The Department for Ed-ucation and Employment now realises that the hour does not meet the needs of the least nor the most able children. If they had listened to teachers in the first place, they would have been able to come up with a more credible scheme.
