Listening to the establishment

Your front-page story on the possibility that Tories may privatise “bad” schools (TES, May 26) carries hidden away in the third paragraph news of an important educational U-turn in Government education policy. You note that one of those involved in the Department for Education’s Improving Schools scheme is the London University Institute of Education.

It would seem that as a Blair government approaches Tory ministers are willing to forget all that they said about the educational establishment, universities producing left-wing teachers and so on.

A small blow for common sense, but too late to save the Government now.
